How to pass Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I)

Few weeks ago I took a course for the Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) in Zürich. It was a very good course which gives you some useful tips and a fundamental understating for the role as scrum master.

After the two day course you can take the online assessment to receive the PSM I certificate. You can also take the online assessment without the two day course but I would not recommend it, because you changes to succeed will not as good when you take the course.

This was not my first assessment in English for a certificate, but honestly I was not so easy as I tough to pass.

For someone which English is a foreign language there are some tough and complex questions.

When you take the course, read and and understand the scrum guide, have some experience with scrum and prepare yourself with the open assessment then you have a good change to pass the exam.

  1. Is there any course material that Scrum.org will provide when we enroll for the exam? if not could you pls suggest a book that helps to clear this exam?

  2. Hi Matt,

I am preparing for PSM I through self study. I know it is difficult but not impossible to achieve through self study. Can you please advise on the resources or references which might help me in the preparation.

    thanks,
    Ashu

  3. When you register for the course you will receive course material. I took the course in zurich an we received course material.

I can recommend you to take the course because you will benefit from the experience from the teacher. I know it will depend on the teacher but our teacher was great.

  4. Take the Scrum Open Assessment some of the question will appear in the PSM I but unfortunately not all :-)

Read and understand the scrum guide and when you have already some experience this will help.

  5. For the PSM I the the scrum guide should your main resource. The power point slide is a good summary. But there are some questions which are hard, because they are not in the scrum guide and you have to understand the philosophy of scrum. For example what do you do with a team member in a scrum team which does not participate. The easy questions are how long should be a sprint.

See stackoverflow which have also some interesting discussion about scrum like “What is the best resource for learning Scrum?”

  6. I passed the exam. Your insights were really helpful. Thanks a lot. Please give me an opportunity to return the favor as well.

  7. As long as you raising the bar of professional software development by practicing it and helping others learn that’s should do the job…. :-)
